The Vals

Project Overview

The Vals thermal baths, designed by Peter Zumthor, are a hymn to materiality and light. Tucked into Switzerland’s Graubünden canton, the space pares bathing back to its essence — no excess, just stone, water, and the sounds of silence. Quartzite walls rise in layered tones, light etches shadows into their depth, and warm mineral pools anchor architecture to the mountains beyond.

This is architecture reduced to its essence — where stone and water stir all the senses.

My Role

I documented this experience through photography and words as part of a personal project exploring sensory design. The focus was on capturing texture, proportion, and the visceral rhythm of hot and cold, dark and light. A study in restraint and the power of detail.
